Frequently Asked Questions

Who is the HypnoBirthing course for?

The great thing about the course is that it is for everyone!

  • First, second or fifth time mums.
  • Women who would like a vaginal birth after caesarean (VBAC).
  • Women who have experienced a difficult, disappointing or traumatic birth.

We have a small selection of current relevant books that can be borrowed on this topic and many other topics related to birth.

How long is the HypnoBirthing course?

The course runs over 5 weeks, each session is 2.5 hours long. New concepts are introduced each session building on the previous week’s knowledge.

Learning how to achieve the birth you want requires time and attention and we don’t believe you can learn or remember everything you need in a one or two day course – investing in a 5 week course allows you to reflect and practice what you’ve learnt from each week and bring any questions you may have to the following week’s class.

Many of our couples become great friends by the end of the 5 weeks, connecting with like-minded people and making their own first mother’s group.

Do you offer a breastfeeding class?

Yes! Our 3 hour Breastfeeding and What to Expect in the First Month of Life class, cover all the details about the benefits of breastfeeding, how breastfeeding works, the key to successful breastfeeding as well as normal infant sleep and developing realistic expectations of your beautiful newborn baby and the fourth trimester.

Do I need to do the breastfeeding class if I am doing the HypnoBirthing classes?

We do recommend that you and your partner attend Breastfeeding and What to Expect in the First Month of Life class. We touch on breastfeeding in class 5 of our HypnoBirthing course but the breastfeeding class is a much more comprehensive course. We offer a package to those who attend both our HypnoBirthing and breastfeeding class – see prices.

Can I get a rebate from my private health insurance?

Great news – YES you can. We can provide you with a receipt for our services with a Medicare provider number. The rebates will be dependent on your individual health insurer and policy.

What if I can’t make one of the sessions can I do a make-up class, how much does that cost?

We totally know that sometimes “stuff” happens, however it’s really important that you get all the new information from each of the sessions. Where possible we will place you into one of the other classes on the week you miss -no charge- or alternatively we will discuss with you a private make up session at a cost of $175 per couple.

Do you have gift vouchers?

Yes we do, they make a great gift from friends and family. Just ask one of the team, they can be personalised as well.

I’m signed up for traditional hospital classes – Do I still need to do those if I do a HypnoBirthing course

The short answer is no, the huge advantage of attending our HypnoBirthing course is that it is only run by qualified midwives, we give you all the information and support you need for a positive birth.

Do you offer birth support?

The support package will be tailored to suit individual needs as one size won’t fit all.

It includes one antenatal appointment 2-3 hrs in which we will get to know each other a little more clarify your birthing preferences and discuss possible alternatives/strategies if circumstances should change ie induction of labour. From here we will formulate a birth plan that we can share with your midwife on the day.

We will be on call from 37 weeks until your birth and available to discuss any concerns or queries during this time. When we meet we will discuss when the best time for this care to start.

The package includes full continuous support during birthing and the immediate postnatal period until you are comfortable. Two postnatal support visits including birth debrief & ongoing breastfeeding support.

What should I wear and do I need to bring anything?

It’s best to wear loose comfortable clothes, pants are good for freedom of movement. Each week you will need to bring your text & handout book, notebook and pen.

Does my partner need to attend?

We recommend that your partner comes. The HypnoBirthing and the Breastfeeding and the First Month of Life courses are designed for you both. We get that sometimes partners can be a bit sceptical at the start but at the end of the 5 weeks we see a real transformation. Your partner will learn about how amazing your body is and will learn all the necessary skills to support you both physically and emotionally through birth – they will feel empowered and excited too!!

If your partner doesn’t want to come or can’t come due to other circumstances, you are welcome to bring a friend, family member or whoever will be supporting you on your birthing day – or alternatively come by yourself and be supported by the Birthing Instincts team.

What is my partner’s role?

“My partner really became my birth warrior, I felt so close to him we were kind of in tune with each other, I think because we both understood what was happening to me and why” Ellie 2019.

One of the great things about the course is that partners really begin to learn just how invaluable their presence is. It absolutely should be viewed as a shared experience. The course really prepares them for birth and beyond.

Through this course partners will gain a tool box full of techniques they can use to support and guide through labour. No one knows you better and this is a huge bonus in the birth setting.

Below are just some of the things partners learn

  • Soft touch massage & acupressure points.
  • Different positions to suggest at different stages.
  • Robozo Manteada (long woven woollen scarf Mexican midwives use) techniques you can use with this before birth during and after.
  • Breathing techniques that will be used before during and after birth
  • How to write a birth plan that represents your informed choices
  • How hugs not drugs can get a labour that’s slowed down restarted
  • What to expect in the days after birth and how to best support your partner and look after yourself as well.
  • What true consent really means, learn to be the advocate, spokesperson, and guide to lead the birth in a direction that is safe, and not intervened with unnecessarily.
  • Learn how to protect your birth environment, keeping it a calm and safe space for birth.
  • Enhance your connection and bond deeply with your baby and your partner.
  • PS we have a lot of fun together learning all of this!

And sooo much more….
